Children between the ages of four and 16 were introduced to the basics of the sport during the two-week camp. They received instructions in the basic rules of the sport, the use and care of squash equipment, the squash grip and how to hit the ball. The camp was sponsored by the SVG Squash Association and was this year offered free to all participants. A short presentation ceremony was held last Friday, during which participants received certificates and T-shirts.

The junior squash camp is held annually during the July/August school vacation; it is used to identify talented and interested children who can join the regular Junior Programme held on Saturdays. Over 20 children are enrolled in the programme which runs from 9 a.m. – noon each Saturday at the National Squash Centre at Paul’s Avenue. This programme has produced the top junior national players over the past ten years.

National coach James Bentick conducted the camp; he was assisted by national junior players Kevin Hannaway and Jason Doyle. Both players placed second in their respective age category in the Caribbean Championships held recently in Jamaica. Hannaway and Doyle are products of the Junior Saturday Programme.

The Junior Saturday Programme recommences on Saturday, September 15. Interested persons can obtain registration forms from the office at the squash centre between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday to Friday. The SVG Squash Association sincerely thanks the parents, children and well-wishers for contributing to another successful squash camp.
