SVG trump Windwards T/20

St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) clinched the 2012 Winlott Inc Windward Islands T/20 Cricket competition when they beat Dominica by 22 runs{{more}} in the final at the Beausejour Cricket Stadium in St Lucia Sunday night.

In their first visit to the final, SVG batted first and was strangled by a five-pronged spin attack employed by the Dominicans, and laboured to 98 for 7 from their 20 overs.

Donwell Hector made 26, Atticus Browne, 25, not out, and Miles Bacombe, 20. Ray Casimir had 2 for 8 and Vivian Titre 2 for 9.

Dominica was then dismissed for 76, undone by the bowling of Kenroy Peters, who bowled at the back end of the innings and hauled in 3 for 11. The consistent Alston Bobb took 2 for 11, Keron Cottoy, 2 for 17, and Rolando Wright, 2 for 19.

SVG came through the preliminary round unscathed, defeating Grenada, St Lucia and Dominica, all in convincing fashion.

In the Vincentians’ outing with the dethroned champions, Grenada, SVG batted first and scored 141.

Lindon James hit 37.

Grenada replied with 85 for 9 off their 20 overs, as SVG won by 56 runs.

Devon Smith topscored with 37 for the Grenadians, but it was the bowling of Casmond Walters — 3 for 16, Rolando Wright — 2 for 27, and Alston Bobb — 2 for 12, which stifled the run chase.

SVG won by 38 runs against host St Lucia.

SVG posted 172 for 4 from their 20 overs.

Desron Maloney cracked 51, Miles Bascombe, 37, Lindon James, 29 not out, and Donwell Hector, 26.

St Lucia made 134 for 6 from their 20 overs. Mervin Wells hit 51 and Gaspar Prospere 48 not out.

Kenroy Peters took 3 for 21 and Alston Bobb had 2 for 9.

And, the Vincentian crowned off the preliminaries with a five-wicket triumph at the expense of Dominica, in a dress rehearsal of the final.

Dominica was dismissed for 90.

Keron Cottoy snared 3 for 24 and Kenroy Peters had 2 for 2. SVG reached 94 for 5 in 18.5 overs. Atticus Bowne made 31 and Keron Cottoy, 20 not out.

Dominica eked out a one-wicket win over St Lucia. The host made 106 for 7, with Dalton Polius hitting 43. Dominica replied with 110 for 9, with three balls to spare.

Dominica also got past Grenada in a cliffhanger, winning off the last ball. Grenada batted first and compiled 126 for 8, to which Dominica responded with 128 for 9, also in 20 overs.

Grenada bounced back to see off St Lucia by 7 wickets.

Darren Sammy blistered 76, dotted with 6 fours and 4 sixes, as the St Lucians got to 147 for 9 from their 20 overs. Grenada replied with 150 for 3.

Grenada took the third spot to leave St Lucia winless.

Grenada scored 174 for 6 from their 20 overs, then dismissed St Lucia for 114, to win by 60 runs.

Dominica were the inaugural winners of the competition in SVG in 2010.

Grenada scooped the title last year, when Dominica was host. (RT)
