GTC Summer camp – more than tennis

The 80-plus participants in the Grassroot Tennis Club (GTC) third annual Tennis Summer Camp have another incentive, other than improving on their tennis skills.{{more}}

The 2012 edition camp, which began last Monday, will see ten of the participants being chosen to attend the Black Sands Swim Squad Summer Sports Camp, which will take place at the Shrewsbury Pool, Ratho-Mill.

Grant Connell, the headman at GTC, said the decision was made to offer the incentive because, as residents of an island, it is important that everyone learns how to swim.

Connell further stated that the idea to sponsor the children’s attendance at the swim camp is a small contribution made on the part of the GTC to the young minds, who may never get an opportunity for such formal training.

The cost of the swim camp is $100 per child, per week.

The 2012 GTC camp is also bearing some additional unexpected fruit, as two of the participants have been identified to get Track and Field coaching from Michael “Lord Have Mercy” Ollivierre, who made a stop at the GTC’s home at Murray’s Road last Tuesday and was pleased with the athleticism of the children.

Additionally, the four players who will enter next month’s ITF tournament are being prepared at the Buccament Bay Resorts high quality courts and will receive gear complements from that establishment.

The GTC Summer camp, which is under the guidance of coaches Trevor Sam and Onike Spann, ends on Saturday, July 28.(RT)
