Calliaqua takes Easter Masters Football title

Howard’s Marine Calliaqua came out winners of the second edition of the Computec Vincy Masters Easter Invitational Football Tournament, which culminated last Sunday night at the Victoria Park.{{more}}

But Calliaqua did so on goal difference, after heavy rains curtailed their last match against last year’s inaugural winner, the host team, Computec Vincy Masters.

The match had to be called off by referee Fitzgerald King, two minutes into the second half, because of a water logged field, with Computec Vincy Masters leading one goal to nil.

With the result of the aborted match upheld, it meant that each team had finished with two wins and a loss; the winner was determined by goal differential.

Going into last Sunday’s final match, Calliaqua needed only a draw to lift the title, while Computec Vincy Masters needed to win by three clear goals.

Calliaqua had previously recorded a 5-2 win over African Tref and had beaten South Leeward by two goals to one.

They dethroned champions defeated South Leeward 4-1 in the opening match, but fell to African Tref 2-1 in their second encounter.

In the other match of the four team round robin tournament, South Leeward recorded a 3-1 triumph over African Tref, to ensure they did not finish the tournament winless.

The presentation ceremony for prizes won in the tournament will take place this Saturday evening at the Altitude Sports Bar on Bay Street, Kingstown. (RT)
