This revelation was made to SEARCHLIGHT by Manager of the National Sports Council Osbourne Browne last Monday.

Browne cited a confluence of circumstances which has led to the cancellation.

“First of all, there was a poor response from the national associations,” Browne said.

“Also, we recognize it will clash with other events around that time,” the NSC Manager further added.

The NSC Manager also stated that despite these, they were attempting to further postpone the event to sometime in May.

“We thought about postponing to next month, but it then believed the awards would have lost all their gloss and meaning as it was too late in the year, hence we called it off all together,” Browne stated.

Browne revealed that the organizing committee will be meeting soon with the national associations to plan the way forward and make the 2012 awards a special one.

Those who faced the disappointment of this year’s cancellation were the prospective Junior and Senior Sportswoman of Year, the Junior and Senior Sportsman of the Year, the International Sports Personality of the Year and the Sports Personality of the Year.

Additionally, the Coach of the Year, the Association of the Year, as well as the Groundsman of the Year and the Sports Journalist of the Year, as well as the Sports Photographer of the Year awards, will have to wait another year before they can take their place on the podium and get that national spotlight.(RT)
