Owia Sports and Cultural Organisation (OSCO) Launched

Scores of Owia residents gathered at the Owia Playing Field on Sunday, March 25, 2012, to support members of the Owia Sports and Cultural Organisation (OSCO) as they officially launched the community based group.{{more}} The mandate of the organization is to develop and promote sporting and cultural activities in Owia and surrounding communities.

Sunday’s launching ceremony was preceded by sporting activities on the Owia playing field which ended around 3:00 pm, when the event officially got started. Remarks were made by President of OSCO St.Clair Lewis; Vice President Arnette Pollard; Commissioner of Police Keith Miller, and President of the Football Federation Venold Coombs and Peace Corp Volunteer Noah Rios.

Several persons from Owia were also honoured at the event, including Julian Pitt for Education; Glamore Baptiste and Kenneth Lorraine for Sports; Devon Child for Sports and Culture, and Patricia Fraser for community work.

The launch of the community group was punctuated with a number of cultural performances from persons in the area, including National Calypso Monarch Maxwell “Tajoe” Francis and prospective contenders in the national junior calypso and soca competitions.

The Owia Community Sports and Cultural Organisation is expected to host the first ever carnival event in Owia from May 25th-27th and other activities throughout the year. The group plans to give back to the community through scholarships for students in the area, assist the less fortunate and take on other developmental projects for the benefit of the community.
