Duncan gets her wish
Dellarice Duncan is the new President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association (SVGNA), a post to which she has always aspired.{{more}}
Duncan was elevated to the presidency last Thursday February 16, when the SVNGA held its Biennial General Meeting, which also included the election of a new Executive.
But Duncan, who had first declined when supervisor of the elections Woodrow Williams announced her nomination, had a change of heart, after the other nominee, the incumbent Godfrey Harry, also responded in the negative.
Duncan, speaking to SEARCHLIGHT, soon after her acceptance of the task of leading the association for the next two years, said: â[It has] always been my wish to become President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines [Netball Association] and I think having been a netballer for some time, I have a vision of where I would like to see the sport goâ.
Expecting to draw on her many years of experience as a national player, Duncan is not throwing her hands in the air, despite the many challenges confronting Netball.
âI expect if not to be number one in the world, but to be on par with the best in the world and I think we have the talent to do so,â Duncan said with optimism.
Duncan acknowledged though that the popularity and success of the sport of Netball in St Vincent and the Grenadines have been falling off for some time.
âIt is unfortunate that at the moment the sport is not doing what we did in the past in terms of being up there; but there is room for improvement and we will work assiduously to ensure that happens,â she stated.
Apart from Duncan, five others were elected unopposed.
Natasha Medford, who was also nominated with Duncan for the post of First Vice President, was automatically installed in that position.
Thelma Foster was returned as the Second Vice President; so too was long-standing Treasurer Jacintha Ballantyne, as well as Public Relations Officer Dianne Questelles.
Cheryl Alexander was the lone nominee for the post of Games Secretary.
However, former Secretary Gailene Gordon lost to former president Doris Mc Intosh 32-13, in one of two voting processes.
The two Committee Members elected were Pearlina Thomas and Gailene Gordon, who received 22 and 21 votes respectively, ahead of Skiddy Francis-Crick and Saska Diamond.
Godfrey Harry will serve in the capacity of Immediate Past President for the next six months.
The new Executive is set convene its first meeting today, Tuesday, February 21, at the Kingstown Netball Centre.
