TSSS athletes make the grade

TSSS athletes make the grade

Athletes from the Thomas Saunders Secondary School have satisfied one part of getting to the Penn Relays in the United States next month.{{more}}

At the Barbados Relay Fair last Saturday, The Thomas Saunders Secondary School team of athletes achieved both qualifying standards for the male and female 4 x 400 m.

The males ran 3 minutes 11 seconds, while the females recorded 4 minutes 11.50 seconds, their best for the year thus far.

The males’ time represents a ten seconds shaving off their season’s best, run at the Team Athletics SVG’s Relay Classics two weekends ago.

Likewise, the females cut off eight seconds last Saturday, from their timing in the Relay Classics.

Coach Godfrey Harry holds the view that his charges will improve on their times, as they head out on their major overseas sojourn.

The next challenge is for the TSSS athletes to impress at the Inter Secondary School Track and Field Meet set for March 29 at the Arnos Vale Playing Field.

From this event, the final team to travel to the Penn Relays will be selected. The TSSS team will consist of thirteen athletes and four officials, all of whom will come from the Thomas Saunders Secondary School.

Last year, the TSSS became the first Vincentian school to compete in the famed Penn Relays.

Then, the school carried an all-male team. However, this time around, females will be part of the contingent.

The 2012 Penn Relays are set for the Franklin Field in Philadelphia from April 26 to 28.
