Athletes jumping at every opportunity

Several athletes turned up last Saturday at the Arnos Vale Two Playing Field to take advantage of Team Athletics SVG’s Jumps Classic,{{more}} as they get ready for their respective schools’ Inter House Meets, the Inter Secondary Schools Championships.

Athletes took part in the Long Jump and the High Jump, in the various age groups.

Kira Joseph-Schubert of the St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown took the Female Under-15 Long Jump, with a distance of 4.15 meters. Omar Lewis of the Thomas Saunders Secondary took the Male Division of the age category with a jump of 3.83 meters.

In the Under-17 Female, the winner was Mililone Edwards of the Greathead Sports Club in a distance of 4.52 meters. Juan Williams also of Greathead Sports Club was the victor in the Male Under-17, with his best of 5.48 meters.

Delina Butcher of the Buccament Bay Secondary and Jaise Williams of the St Martin’s Secondary won the female and male categories respectively of the Under-19 age group. Butcher’s best jump was 2.83 meters and Williams’ was 5.63 meters.

Joel O ‘Garro of X- Cel triumphed in the Male-19 and Over with his jump of 5.85 meters.

Alrick Wright claimed the male veterans title with his jump of 4.42 meters and Genita Lewis, the females’, with her best attempt of 2.09 meters.

In the High Jump segment, Chenade Nanton of the St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown cleared the bar at 1.32 meters to win the Female Under-15 and Hasheem Daniel of the St Vincent Grammar School was the male winner. Daniel’s best height was 1.47 meters.

In the Under-17 Female Division, the winner was the Greathead Sports Club’s Mililone Edwards with a height of 1.37 meters.

The Male Under-17 winner was Patrick De Freitas of the St Vincent Grammar School in a height of 1.67 meters.

Jalami Kelly of X- Cel with a height of 1.62 meters was the best in the Male Under-19, and Joel O’ Garro also of X- Cel, who cleared the bar at 1.57 meters, won the Male Under-21 age group.

The Jumps Classic follows on the hosting of the Throws Classic and the Relays Classic.

Meanwhile, the Athletics Sub- Committee of the Schools Games Committee has released the dates for the major primary and secondary school Track and Field Meets.

The Primary Schools’ Heats are slated for March 7 and 8, with the Secondary Schools’ Heats carded for March 22 and 23.

The Finals of the Inter Primary Schools Championships take place on Wednesday, March 29, with the Inter Secondary Schools Finals taking place the following day, Thursday, March 29.

The closing date for registration in the primary championships is February 27 and for the secondary championships, March 8.(RT)
