The announcement of the new competition was made on Wednesday during a press conference, at which President of the Football Federation Venold Coombs disclosed that the competition is an addition to the national club championship calendar.

“As we stated time and time again, we are going to make more people play football.

“The players complain that they are not playing enough football, so you are going to have this community concept, then you are going to have the club concept. As you know FIFA emphasizes clubs. So we are not leaving out the clubs. We clearly are going to add that to our calendar of activities to make sure that footballers play more football and the people watch more football.

“We’ve said time and time again we want to bring football back to the people. We want to generate more interest into the game…” Coombs, told the media.

This initiative, according to Coombs is part of efforts to further develop football here.

The league will consist of four divisions: a senior division, under-17, under-13, and a women’s division.

There are also prizes to be won in each division. Winners of the senior division will receive EC$10,000; under-17, $5,000 and the winners of the women’s is division will receive $3,000.

The under-13 division, however, will be awarded prizes such as laptops, among other rewards, that are still being considered by the Federation.

The Invitational Community Championship/Inter League kicks off on Sunday evening under the flood lights at the Victoria Park.(AA)
