This appointment was communicated last week by letter to Coombs, by FIFA’s General Secretary, Jerome Valcke.

An elated Coombs told SEARCHLIGHT last Saturday that he was “honoured” by the appointment and was already preparing to send the necessary personal details, as requested, back to the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, as soon as possible.

“It is a real pleasure for me and St Vincent and the Grenadines Football as a whole,” Coombs said.

Coombs further added that he believes he is the first Vincentian to be appointed to such a prestigious position.

Coombs thinks it is a good fillip for the sport here in St Vincent and the Grenadines, as it brings this nation into international focus.

“I want to see the best for St Vincent and the Grenadines Football and Football in the region,” the Football head stated.

Valcke wrote that the governing body was in the process of restructuring the Organising Committee, hence Coombs’s appointment.

Additionally, the letter informed Coombs that he will be required to travel to Switzerland sometime in the future, to be part of the planning process.

Coombs was among 26 presidents of the Caribbean Football Union who journeyed to Switzerland last month and met with FIFA President Joseph “Sepp” Blatter, to sort out administrative issues confronting the regional body.

At that meeting, a Normalisation Committee was established to run the affairs of CFU until the next congress is staged, at which a new executive will be elected. (RT)
