Vinlec wins inaugural Firms Football Tournament

Vinlec Power Stars clinched the league title of the inaugural Digicel/ Breakaway Masters Firms Football Competition, last Saturday afternoon, beating Transport and Works on penalties in the final.{{more}}

Regulation time proved insufficient for both teams, as the midfield battle did not produce enough goal scoring chances and as the respective defences held firmly.

Additonally, the soft conditions in some parts of the Grammar School Playing Field, at times interrupted the flow of the match.

When it came to the nervy penalty kicks, there was more tension, as following the first five, both teams were still locked 4-4, each having missed one.

In sudden death, it came down to 5-5, when the tension rose.

Former national selectee, Transport and Works’ Dave Hayde rocketed his shot onto the right upright, leaving Vinlec only to score and cop the title.

Romano Woods obliged, as he calmly deposited his penalty kick in the back of the net, to give Vinlec a 6-5 win and the first lien on the competition.

In getting to the semi-finals, Vinlec defeated Prime Minister’s Office 3-1 and Transport and Works stopped Coreas Hazells Inc. 3-0.

Coreas/Hazells Inc. had an easy taking in the intended third place play-off, as Prime Minister’s Office did not show up.

This match was to have preceded last Saturday’s final.

The final was almost a carbon copy of the final of the Soccerama, which ushered in the tournament, when Vinlec defeated Transport and Works also on penalties in the elimination 15 minutes competition.

Transport and Works had an opportunity yesterday, Monday, when they were set to face Prime Minister’s Office in the finals of the Knock Out, also at the Grammar School Playing Field.

The Presentation and Closing Ceremony of the tournament will take place at a later date and venue to be decided by the organisers.(RT)
