Titles decided in SSTTA Independence Tournament

The titles up for grab in the Alhap Shipping Agency Sean Stanley Table Tennis Academy Independence Tournament were decided last week Wednesday at the Old Anglican School Annex.{{more}}

Taking the Under-14 singles was Jumar Pope who beat Junard Ford commandingly, 11-7, 11-7.

In getting to the Finals, Pope beat Jamai Williams, 11-3, 12-10, and Ford saw off Samuel Joshua, 11-8, 11-3.

In the Under-16 Finals, which was one of the highlights of the evening, Javier deShong defeated Rolando Maxwell 8-11, 11-9 , 6-11 , 12- 10, 11-8, as they pushed each other to a five setter.

deShong beat Desron Wilson 11- 4, 11-9 and 15-13, with Maxwell outpointing Jumar Pope, 11-6, 12-10, and 11-7, in straight three sets wins.

Romano Spencer, playing his first SSTTA event, took the men’s singles title, as he stopped Kamal Hunte 5-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, and finally, 11-5 .

Spencer, in the semi final match up, disposed of Damion Dublin, 11-7 , 5-11, 11-7, 11-7, to set up the championship game with Hunte.

The south paw Hunte held off veteran player Joseph Carrington 10-12, 11-8, 17-15, 12-10, as the night’s activities got to another of its high points.

Carrington and Dublin ensured that they did not leave the venue empty-handed as they beat reigning Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States(OECS) Doubles champions Kamal Hunte and Romano Spencer, 12-10, 8-11, 11-13, 12-10, 11-7, in a ding dong battle for the honours.

Desron Wilson was voted the Most Improved Player.

The junior players were on the receiving end of trophies, while the senior players were given cash awards.

Stanley, a former President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association(SVGTTA), at the brief closing ceremony, expressed his thanks to the sponsors Alhap Shipping and the other persons who made the event a success. (RT)
