The inclement weather, which threatened the event, did not dampen the enthusiasm of the hundreds of athletes who turned up to be part of the four-legged relay.

Such was the response that organizers were forced to have separate races.

First, it was the primary and secondary schools which competed for honours and bragging rights.

It was the North Leeward primary institutions which dominated this category.

Fitz Hughes Primary was first to finish in the female segment of the race, which saw each of the four athletes covering just about one mile, starting at the First International Caribbean Bank, up Sharpe Street then onto Bay Street, turning on Lower Bay Street and back to the starting point.

The Chateaubelair Methodist was second, with another of the Fitz Hughes teams copping the third spot.

In the male segment of the primary schools category, the winner was the Park Hill Government, with Fitz Hughes Primary taking the second and third spots.

In the Secondary School Category, the George Stephens Secondary upstaged the 2010 winners, the Petit Bordel Secondary, beating them into second place.

The Buccament Bay Secondary which took the early lead, but faltered along the way, docked in third.

North Leeward took all the prizes among the female secondary schools’ participants.

Crossing the finish line first was the Petit Bordel Secondary, with Troumaca second and another Petit Bordel team, third.

The second race saw the more competitive athletes taking their turn on the slippery roads, as the rains bucketed on capital Kingstown.

Much of the anticipation was in the regional category, which had the host nation opposing its neighbour, Grenada.

But it was the Grenadian quartet which triumphed, despite a valiant effort by Pamenos Ballantyne, who had to pull out all his years of experience and was able to reduce a 250-metre lead to a mere three metres at the last hand-over.

In the open female, the winning combination named ‘It Dat’ was the first place winner, with ‘Sports Combine’ second and X- Ceed Sports Club third.

X- Cel One was first in the Open male category; second was Wings Warriors and third Sports Combine.

All three top finishers in the various categories received cash prizes.

It was the biggest Round D Town Road Relay, as over sixty teams participated.

The attention this Sunday turns to the Diamond Estate for the Cross Country run. (RT)
