SVG women place sixth in W.I. Cricket Tournament

St. Vincent and the Grenadines had to settle for sixth place in the West Indies Women’s Tournament, which concluded in Barbados last Sunday.{{more}}

It was one of the worst showings for the Vincentians in recent times, after they placed second in 2010 and were crowned champions twice, during past seven years.

Guyana made 127 all out off 47.5 overs. Tremayne Smartt topscored with 24. Bowling for the Vincentians, Sheree-Ann John took 2 for 12, Rochelle John 2 for 24.

In reply, St. Vincent and the Grenadines was all out for 84 off 26.3 overs. Juliana Nero hit 42, as Shemaine Campbell copped 3 for 8, Joann Vansertima 3 for 9, and Subrina Munroe 3 for 11, as Guyana won by 43 runs.

In the Championship game, Jamaica dethroned Trinidad and Tobago. Jamaica batted first and scored 136 all out off 48.1 overs, Stefanie Taylor scored 45, Natasha McLean 34 and Shanel Daley 28.

Anisa Mohammed bagged 4 for 20, Gaitri Seetahal 3 for 25, and Felicia Walters 2 for 25.

But Trinidad and Tobago fell for 106 all out off 42.1 overs. Brittney Cooper topscored with 43. Stefanie Taylor again led the way with 2 for 14, and Shanel Daley 2 for 23, as Jamaica romped to a 30-run triumph and the 2011 title.

Jamaica regained the title, which they last won in 2008, while Trinidad and Tobago was looking for its third consecutive lien.

Meanwhile, Barbados secured the third spot over St. Lucia.

Taking first strike, St. Lucia was dismissed for 111off 41.4 overs. Swayline William was the topscorer with 31. Danielle Small 5 for 9 and Shaquana Quintyne 3 for 20, bowling for the host nation.

Barbados rushed to 112 for 3 off 19.2 overs. Kycia Knight cracked 50, and Danielle Small 35, as Barbados secured the third place by seven wickets.

And, in the fight for seventh and eighth spots, Grenada romped to a 234-run win over Dominica.

Afy Fletcher slammed 133; Debbie-Ann Lewis made 47 not out and Rachel Cyrus 43.

Bowling for Dominica, Anica Benjamin took 2 for 45. In reply Dominica scored 79 all out off 27.5 overs, as Afy Fletcher snared 4 for 18, Rachel Cyrus 2 for 7 and Marilyn Nelson 2 for 25.

The Vincentians’ opening encounter against Barbados was rained out. They then lost to St. Lucia, but went on to beat Dominica by eight wickets and Grenada by 74 runs.

A West Indies team will host Pakistan in four One-Day matches here at the Arnos Vale Playing Field, August 28, 30 and September 1 and 3. (RT)
