But it is a tour with a difference, as the women are also using the occasion to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The visiting team’s coach, Director of Sports Ministries Dennis Scott told SEARCHLIGHT last Saturday that each year, two of the six university sports teams travel out to different parts of the world on sports ministries.

At Northland University, Men’ s and Women’s Football, Men’s and Women’s Volleyball and Men’s and Women’s Basketball, are the main sporting disciplines that are honed.

In explaining the Football team’s mission here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Scott said: “We are here to play Soccer, of course, build relationships and, most of all, share the gospel”.

Scott disclosed that such relationships have already begun to germinate, as three local players have been added to his squad, because he was unable to get his full complement of players to travel to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“Sports is a good vehicle to share the gospel,” Scott reiterated.

Scott revealed that the Northland University has close relations with the Baptist Bible College here, which is located at Ratho Mill, hence it was easy to make the choice to come to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Scott said that at the end of each match, a multi-coloured ball is given to the opposing team and the significance of each colour is explained, all with special spiritual meaning.

The ball carries the colours black, red, gold, white and green.

Apart from the ball, literature will be distributed to the players.

Scott, who is on his first visit to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, although he has been to other places in the Caribbean on similar missions, said that apart from his team’s main objectives, he is appreciative of the mountainous terrain here, and is touched by the warmth of Vincentians.

The Northland International University played its first match last Saturday at the Brighton Playing Field and lost to Ian Sardine’s System 3, two goals to nil.

Yesterday, Monday, the visitors were slated to meet Dig Deep Warriors at the Grammar School Playing Field.

The visit of the Northland University outfit comes at a time when the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation is renewing its effort at re-energising women’s Football here. (RT)
