Mitres stays on top of local Netball

Western Union Mitres added the Knock Out Division One title to their wins, to be crowned double champions, when the 2011 National Club Tournament concluded last Sunday evening at the Kingstown Netball Centre.{{more}}

In front of a small gathering of Netball die-hards, Mitres beat arch rivals Vita Malt Maple 66-61 to end unbeaten throughout the season. Maple, the 2010 Knock Out winners, led the first quarter 17-14, but Mitres rebounded to take the second, 33-28, the third, 50-44, and finally 66-61. For Mitres, Gailene Gordon scored 51 of her 56 attempts, Shellisa Davis, 13 of 19, and Nicole Sandy- Stevenson, 2 of 3. For Maple, Skiddy Francis-Crick recorded 52 of her 59 attempts and Thelma Foster 9 of her 18.

Mitres last did the double in 2009.

Also completing the double was French Verandah X-Ceed, which saw off Maple Two, 93-37, in the Division Two Knock Out finals. For X- Ceed, Mary Ann Frederick scored 88 of her 93 and Kendra Lavia, 5 of her 8.

For Maple, Oneka Stapleton scored 34 of her 38, and Shadeen Baptiste, 3 of 5.

French Verandah X- Ceed also did the double last year, but at that time, they competed in Division 3.

The major individual awards went to Skiddy Francis- Crick, of Vita Malt Maple, who for the umpteenth time was the most accurate senior shooter. Francis-Crick scored 372 goals of her 399 attempts, to finish with a 93.23 % accuracy.

Francis -Crick’s team mate Vasha Adams copped the Most Outstanding Senior Player award for the second year in a row.

Mary Ann Fredrick was the leading scorer among the Juniors and the Most Accurate Shooter for the fourth year in succession.

The bean pole Frederick, the 2009 Junior Sportswoman of the Year, poured in 352 goals of her 388 attempts, to return a 90.72 % accuracy.

The Most Outstanding Junior Player was Shanice Daniel, of French Verandah X-Ceed. Daniel was also named the Best Centre Court Player.

The Best Senior Defender was Pearlitha Sylvan, of X- Ceed, and for the Juniors, it was Delonie Sam, of Sea Operations Nar Fren Dem.

Ruth Ann Williams, of Twilight Trading X- Ceed, copped the Best Center Court award among the seniors.

Additionally, one member of each of the 33 teams which finished the competition was awarded with her team’s Most Valuable Player award.

The shared team awards saw Third Eye Security X- Ceed taking the Division 3 League title and Nar Fren Dem, the Knock Out.

Nature Care Netters took the Division 4 League competition, and Dutch Lady Clinchers, the Knock Out.

ASCO won the inaugural Knock Out in the newly introduced Veterans Division.

Glen United, a Division 3 outfit, was adjudged the Most Disciplined Team and Customs and Excise Sports Club, which competed in Division 4, won the award for the Most Improved Team. (RT)
