Mitres completes triple treat

Western Union Mitres completed their third lien on the Division One championships, of the Digicel National Club Tournament, when they ousted arch rivals Vita Malt Maple 55-51 last Wednesday evening at the Kingstown Netball Centre.{{more}}

However, the usual nervy match up which normally characterizes the top flight of local Netball never lived up to its billing, as the brilliance of the two outfits came in short bursts and was intermittent, like the showers which hovered during the match.

Mitres led in all quarters, first establishing a one point advantage at the end of the first, leading 16-15.

Played in between some popcorn drizzles, Mitres extended their supremacy in the second, as they scored 15 goals to Maple’s 11, leaving the second quarter at 31-26.

This margin was maintained in the third quarter, which finished 43-38. Maple, though, in the final quarter, came within one point of their opponents at 52-51. However, Mitres pulled away to seal the title for the third year running.

For Mitres, Gailene Gordon sank 39 of her 50 attempts, with Shelllisa Davis scoring 16 out of her 22.

And, for the reigning OECS Champion of Champions Maple, their tally came from Skiddy Francis-Crick, who poured in 44 from her 52 attempts, and the evergreen Thelma Foster, sank 7 of her 12.

Mitres has a chance to do the double, as they are also into the finals of the Division One, which takes place this Sunday, also at the Kingstown Netball Centre, as the lid is put on the 2011 edition.

Following this Sunday’s final, the Presentation and Closing Ceremony will take place. (RT)
