Ollivierre mounts OECS Cycling podium

Dominic Ollivierre placed second in the OECS Cycling Road Race last Sunday in Antigua and Barbuda.{{more}}

Ollivierre finished the 75 mile event in 3 hours 17 minutes, 46.66 seconds. The race consisted of three laps around a 25 mile circuit.

It was Ollivierre’s highest placing in a sub regional event. The race was won by Antiguan Jyme Bridges in 3 hours 17 minutes 45.85 seconds, as the main bunch made a mad sprint for the finish line.

Docking in third was Grenadian Sydney Walters, whose time was 3 hours 17 minutes 46.70 seconds.

The other Vincentian cyclists who completed the race were Orano Andrews, who clocked 3 hours 23 minutes 18.53 seconds, to take the eleventh spot, with Shimano Bailey clocking 3 hours 46 minutes 59 sconds, as he placed twenty third, with 28 of the 40 starters completing the course.

The other Vincentians making up the list of entrants were Deptor Culzac, Cammie Adams and Zephal Bailey. Culzac encountered some mechanical problems, and was forced out of the race, while Adams and Bailey had travelled to be part of the Junior Division of the race. However, organisers ditched that category because of an insufficient number of participants.

The two youngsters, however, rode part of the race, before opting out. Adams and Bailey are preparing for the Caribbean Juvenile Championships in August.

Coach of the Vincentian team and President of the SVG Cycling Union Trevor Bailey told SEARCHLIGHT that he was pleased that Ollivierre was able to mount the podium.

Bailey confirmed that Ollivierre, who is based in the USA, was able to finish strongly, with help from Andrews, as they rode as a team.

He said it was also good that Dominic’s father Steve Ollivierre was able to attend the championships, to give him that support.

Bailey said that through preparation grant funds from the National Olympic Committee, the cyclists, who were also accompanied by manager Justin Douglas and mechanic Peter Durrant were able to make the trip.

The head of the local Cycling union revealed that on Sunday, June 26, there will be the national championships, a 62 mile event.

Bailey added that efforts will be made to have Ollivierre and Andrews back home for the event.

Andrews is based in the British Virgin Islands.
