Local sporting obits for the year 2010

This country during 2010 lost several persons who had contributed to the local sporting landscape.{{more}}

Among those was who passed away was former national footballer and former President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Association, Sylvester “Scobie” Taylor.

Likewise, national female footballer Matika Ferdinand died during the year, so, too, did former national footballer Charles “Luxie” Quashie.

Football also lost Donavan St. John, who was a fixture at the Victoria Park, as he served duties as a referee during the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Late last week, Football and Basketball lost Jeffrey “Scribby” Da Silva, who served as an Executive member of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Basketball Federation.

Da Silva also served as a player and administrator of the Mwando Football Club.

Also departing life’s playing field was former national cricketer and administrator, the iconic Frank Gilbert “Frankie” Thomas.

He served the SVG cricket Association in the capacities of Secretary and Vice President between 1951 and 1977.

He was a West Indies Cricket team selector from 1967 to 1974 and was the West Indies team Manager in 1977.

Also among the obituaries was John Mc Lean, a former bodybuilder, and long standing administrator, trainer and competition judge of the sport.

Winston John, also of Bodybuilding fame, exited this life for his eternal home. (RT)
