Grassroot Junior Tennis Tournament concludes

The SVG General Services Grassroot Junior Christmas Tennis tournament officially came to a close last Tuesday, December 28, with the Presentation and Closing Ceremony, which was held at the Club’s base, the Haddon Hotels courts, located on Murray’s Road.{{more}}

The first tournament of this nature for the Grassroot Tennis Club saw several budding Tennis players getting their hands on their maiden sporting trophies and accolades.

Rio Connell won the Boys 6 and Under singles crown, with Demetra Fernandez, the winner of the Girls 6 and Under.

Antonio Cain won the Boys 8 and Under. He was also adjudged one of the four Most Promising Players.

Gabrielle Benn pouched the Girls 10 and Under, with the winner of the Boys 10 and Under, Sauvy Samuel.

Richard Hoyte secured the Boys 12 and Under and Amarlie Benn, the Girls 12 and Under winner.

Terrence Providence, J’vonte Creese and Kanesia Lampkin joined Cain as the Most Promising Players awardees.

Providence copped the award among the 6 and Under, Creese in the 10 and Under age group and Lampkin, the lone female among the four, in the Girls 12 and Under.

All winners and their runners up were presented with trophies, while all other participants left the venue with participation medals.

Making his first presentation at a sporting function, since talking up the post as Minister of National Mobilisation, Social Development, Family, Persons with Disabilities, Youth, Sports and Culture, Frederick Stephenson, told the young Tennis players that from among them could emerge top local players as well as international stars, if they stick to the sport.

Head of the Grassroot Tennis Club, Grant Connell, welcomed the enthusiasm of Stephenson, as he readily accepted his invitation to speak at the Closing and Presentation Ceremony.

Connell also stated that soon Grassroot will roll out other competitions, including a Senior Tournament, set for early in the new year and other grand Junior Tennis Tournament, slated for Easter.

Also addressing last Tuesday’s function were First Vice President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tennis Association (SVGTA), Lorna Edwards, Kirl Simmons who represented the sponsors, SVG General Services, and past President of the SVGTA Michael Nanton.(RT)
