Two Netball Competitions begin this weekend

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Ashburton Sports and Cultural Organisation (ASCO) and the C & R Enterprises Sion Hill Netball competitions will get going this weekend.{{more}}

The ASCO competition will start on Saturday at the Gomea Methodist School court.

This competition has had to be delayed by one week. Intended for opening last Sunday, the competition had to be pushed back to this Saturday, after it was discovered that the floodlights which were disconnected to facilitate work on the Gomea Methodist School, through the Basic Needs Trust Fund, were not re-connected.

Everything remains the same for tomorrow’s opening which is set for a 3pm commencement.

The March past of teams as well as the usual remarks from Netball and government officials are part of the afternoon’s proceedings.

It will also hear addresses from Minister of State in the Ministry of National Mobilisation etc. Cecil Mc Kie, President of the SVG Netball Association Godfrey Harry and President of ASCO Dennisford Foster. Teams will also be judged for Best Dressed and Best Banner awards.

Eighteen teams will vie for title honours in this year’s competition, which is the 18th edition. Seven will contest Division One, eight in Division Two and three in Division Three. ASCO One is the Division One defending champs, Clinchers will defend Division Two and ASCO 3 will defend Division Three.

Following the Opening Ceremony, two games will be contested. In the first encounter, Yanja Young Strugglers will meet new comers A.J Block Making Ian Allen Secret Clickers, then defending champs ASCO One will go head to head with Pace Setters.

On Sunday, it is the turn of the Sion Hill Netball Committee to get their competition rolling at the Sion Hill Playing Field hard-court.

It will be the sixteenth consecutive year that the competition will be sponsored by C & R Enterprises.

Also scheduled to begin at 4pm, there will be the March Past and opening ceremony, punctuated with comments from sports and Netball officials.

Sunday’s opening match pits defending League and Knock Out champions, ASCO One versus RP Ballers for the Sylvia Knights-Clarke trophy.

Fifteen teams in two divisions will seek to get the better of each other, when competition gets going in earnest.

Nice Radio Pine Hill Clinchers won both the league and Knock Out titles in Division Two last year. (RT)
