Andrews on the double

Orano Andrews re-established his rank as this country’s top cyclist when he won both races staged by the SVG Cycling Union last weekend.{{more}}

On Saturday, in the Rupert ‘Putty’ Minors Memorial Hill Climb from the Mesopotamia Police Station to Belmont, the Tortola based Andrews was the first to finish in the Road Bike Category in the three-mile event.

Andrews clocked 11 minutes 09.27 seconds, with Shimano Bailey second in 11 minutes 55.68 seconds, and third Peter Durrant in 12 minutes 40.14 seconds.

In the Mountain Bike category, the winner was Steve Ollivierre in a time of 15 minutes 37.65 seconds, and in the Juvenile category, the winner was Zefal Bailey. His time was 12 minutes 56.55 seconds and second was Sherwin James in 13 minutes 08.96 seconds.

On Sunday, Andrews was once more ahead of the pack, as he rode for 1 hour 34 minutes 50.43 seconds to take the 28 mile event.

This took the cyclists from Howard Marine in Villa to the Round About in Arnos Vale, then to Ratho Mill and return seven times.

Again trailing him was Shimano Bailey, by almost three minutes. Bailey’s time was 1 hour 37 minutes 09 seconds, and third was again Peter Durrant. The veteran Durrant finished the course in 1 hour 37 minutes 38.27 seconds.

The Mountain Bike category consisted of four laps and was won by Steve Ollivierre.

Ollivierre’s time was 1 hour 02 minutes 18 seconds, and second was David Thomas in 1 hour 19 minutes 28 seconds as they covered 16 miles.

In the Juvenile category, which was a 28 mile affair, saw Zefal Bailey triumphing in 1 hour 57 minutes 11.40 seconds and second was again Sherwin James, who took 1 hour 57 minutes 11.85 seconds, in a close finish.

The BMX category, which was three laps, was taken by Trad Culzac, who clocked 1 hour 12 minutes 39 seconds. (RT)
