Layou United wins Vincy Soccer Cup

A 12th minute own goal by a Combine Ballers defender as he attempted to clear the crowded goal area, following a corner by Darren Dopwell,{{more}} gave Layou United a one nil win in the finals of the Vincy Cup Soccer Championship, at the Boys High Stadium Last Saturday evening in Brooklyn, New York.

Sadly, the game did not finish without mishap, as seconds into the final whistle, a player from each of the teams collided, which resulted in Presley John, Layou’s captain, having to be stretchered off the field, after being unconscious for a few moments.

John, who is the brother of former national players Ezra Hendrickson and Wesley John did not suffer any serious injury and was released from the hospital the same night.

The Layou team played undefeated in the tournament, which was held for the first time last year. This was the first time they were entering. Layou United also dominated the Presentation Ceremony which followed the final game.

Layou’s dominance was evident in all areas, as they scored the Most Goals in the competition, 21; they also had the least number of goals scored against them.

Millon Prescott of Layou was MVP of the Tournament. The Best Goalkeeper was Mark Williams of Layou, Best defender and MVP of the Championship was Troy Jeffers, while another Layou player, Presley John, was voted the Most Disciplined Player. Everard Young, coach of Layou and Manager Omar Dopwell were awarded the Best Coach and Manager, respectively.

Sienard Bowens of Future Stars was adjudged the Best Midfielder.

Renson Haynes and Joel Forde of Combine Ballers tied for scoring the Most Goals.

In the third place play off, which preceded the finals, Stingers emerged third over Future Stars, with Albany Kickers taking the Masters Division from Maestros.

On hand to assist with the distribution of trophies and other prizes won during the Tournament were Acting Consul General Cyril ‘Scorcher” Thomas, Nelson Samuel, Verna Arthur and Maxine Seales.
