More basketball coaches certified

Several new Basketball coaches with Level One certification have been added to this country’s list, but President of the St. Vincent{{more}} and the Grenadines Basketball Federation Cleophas Gylnn wants them to make use of this new knowledge.

Glynn at the closing ceremony of the ten-day course last Saturday evening at the New Montrose Basketball Facility said, “Put that paper to work, let it not go to waste.”

Glynn was speaking with the knowledge that over the years, several coaches have been trained in Basketball, yet many have not put their training into practice.

Gylnn revealed that there is a strong likelihood that a Level Two course will come St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ way, in the very near future.

Facilitator of the course, International Olympic Committee/ International Basketball Federation accredited Coach, American Nelson Isley, also stated that St. Vincent and the Grenadines has been the beneficiary of several such training courses, and like Glynn, urged the recipients to make use of the certification.

Isley told the coaches to attend as many courses as possible, even if they are at the same level, as every coach has something new to tell them, hence they will learn more.

Among the participants, were persons who have attended such courses before.

But one new achiever, Cecelia Smart, who is a trained Basketball and Netball table official, extended her expertise to coaching.

Smart told SEARCHLIGHT she was impressed with Coach Isley’s delivery of the rudiments of the sport.

“I have learnt a lot of drills and ones that I have never seen,” Smart said.

“I used to play Basketball before, but had to stop because of injury,” she added.

The National Olympic Committee was instrumental in getting the course here. The cost of the course was put at just over EC$20,000.

With fresh and refreshed coaches, the task is now left for them to go out into the communities and impart their knowledge.

One person who pledged to do just that was Vasha Adams, who spoke on behalf of the coaches.
