St. Lucia takes top spot in U-19 Cricket competition

Two back to back outright wins against Dominica, the 2009 champions, then Grenada, landed St. Lucia, the championship of the 2010 Windward Islands Power Companies Windwards Under-19 two-day Cricket competition.{{more}}

Having lost on first innings to host St. Vincent and the Grenadines in their opening encounter, the St. Lucians rebounded to upset the apple cart when they completed a four-wicket win over Dominica last week Thursday at Arnos Vale Two.

Dominica posted 258, batting first, with Elton Mack making 63; Emmanuel Peter, 42, and Jelani Robinson, 34. Audie Alexander took 4 for 98, Alvinus Simon, 3 for 43, and Bronte Bess, 2 for 46.

St. Lucia responded with 182. Dwight Thomas scored 44, as Derrick Peter copped 3 for 18 and Kyle James, 2 for 22.

A poor second innings batting performance saw Dominica close at 99 for 9. Jamal James ripped through their batting with figures of 5 for 7, and Kurt Edwards, 2 for 33.

Asked to make 176 to win, St. Lucia was powered by Alexander’s 87 not out while losing six wickets in the process.

And they completed the championship journey with a nine wicket triumph over Grenada on Sunday at Arnos Vale Two.

Grenada was routed for 75, with Alvinus Simon taking 4 for 10, Audie Alexander, 2 for 1, and Jamal James, 2 for 13.

St. Lucia replied with 280. Awen Charles made 69, Bronte Bess, 42, and Kurt Edwards, 324. Rudolph Paul snapped up 4 for 55 and Josh Thomas, 2 for 52.

The Grenadians made 229, batting a second time. Denis Smith scored 59, Levaughn Lewis struck 57 not out and Kellon Lewis, 46 as Alexander pocketed 5 for 67 and Simon, 3 for 9.

The St. Lucians got the 25 required for the loss of one wicket, with the knowledge that they would win the two day title for the first time since 1987. They finished with 27 points, ahead of Dominica’s 17. (RT)
