SVG awaits the arrival of the Queen’s Baton

The St Vincent and the Grenadines sports fraternity is eagerly preparing for the arrival of the Queen’s Baton and the commencement of our leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR).{{more}}

Tomorrow, Saturday, March 6, 2010, the Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi will arrive here from Grenada, the 35th of its 71 Commonwealth destinations. St. Vincent and the Grenadines has prepared an exciting program to welcome the Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi.

The Queen’s Baton Relay, the traditional curtain raiser to the Commonwealth Games and an inclusion in the Games Program since the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games in Wales, will be featured on St Vincent and the Grenadines on Sunday, March 7, and on Mustique on the following day, Monday, March 8.

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines National Olympic Committee President, Trevor Bailey, said: “Planning is still in progress, and we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the baton into our community. Details of the exact route the baton will travel through Kingstown and information about celebration activities will be released later this week.”

Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the QBR, Conrad Simon, has indicated: “Several of this country’s leading personalities have been invited to be part of the QBR, including Elton Anderson, a participant in the 100m and 200m at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff. All affiliates of the NOC will be involved. It will be a wonderful experience as we celebrate our heritage in tandem with the QBR”.

The Queen’s Baton Relay 2010 Delhi will conclude in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium during the Opening Ceremony of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi on October 3, 2010. During the ceremony, the final Baton bearer will hand the baton back to Her Majesty, or Her representative. The message will then be removed and read aloud, officially opening the Games.
