Football heating up Sharpes

The community of Redemption Sharpes is abuzz on afternoons, as it hosts the Social Investment Fund Sharpes Inter-Village Football Competition.{{more}}

Curtis Browne, one of the members of the Sharpes Educational Sports and Cultural Organisation (SESCO), told SEARCHLIGHT: “It is designed with the improvement of attitude and the development of young footballers of the community.”

Browne said that it was the first time in his memory that a Football competition in Sharpes has been so restrictive.

The competition is only open to teams and players who reside in the Central Kingstown Constituency.

The Sharpes competitions of the 1980s and 1990s was one of the top out of season leagues, then referred to as a minor league.

Browne said that his organization is hopeful that out of the competition, the community’s image of a Football force will be enhanced.

Following the opening last Sunday, the competition began in earnest the following day, Monday, with Up Plan, defeating Gloja’s Trading City Strikers, 2-1.

On Tuesday, Ghetto Youths, blanked Hollywood, 3-0, and on Wednesday, Fraser Construction Company Green Hill, beat Foreign Base Youths, 2-0.

The teams are divided into two zones. In Zone A are Up Plan, City Strikers, Avenues, Foreign Base Youths, Computec Stars, Green Hill and Montrose United. Stashed in Zone B are Rodney’s Trucking High Street, Central, Hollywood, Ghetto Youths, Rocks Rollers and Paul Over.

Apart from winning the tournament, the teams are vyeing for a first prize of $1000. The second place earns $700 and the third place team pockets $300.(RT)
