The name Mary Ann Frederick seems fast becoming synonymous with Netball shooting accuracy.

The towering six-footer, last week Friday afternoon recorded the most goals in the Senior Division of the 2008/2009 Vita Malt Inter Secondary Schools’ Netball Competition.{{more}}

Frederick in total sank 188 goals from her 217 attempts at the ring.

Frederick, a Form Five student of the Dr. JP Eustace Memorial Secondary School, led her team to victory over 2007 champions, St. Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua, 36 to 26. And, Frederick was her school’s top shooter on the afternoon, scoring 34 of her 44 attempts; in fact, she scored 94 percent of her team’s total in the final.

But taking such accolade is not new. Frederick was the 2008 Caribbean Netball Union’s Under-16 Tournament’s top shooter when it was staged in Antigua and Barbuda last April. Then, she sank 150 goals from her 173 attempts, recording an 86.71 percent shooting accuracy. Her efforts in the circle helped St. Vincent and the Grenadines earn the award of the Most Accurate Shooting Team, with an average of 80.08 percent, having scored 189 goals from 236 attempts.

It was no surprise that she was selected to a West Indies provisional squad of 16 players.

A member of the X-Ceed Sports Club, Frederick was the 2007 and 2008 Division 3 top goal scorer in the National Club Championships, with her most recent statistics showing her amassing 356 goals.

This rise in her performance saw the 16-year-old, getting a call up for possible selection to the senior team.

Frederick was part of her club X-Ceed’s senior outfit that placed second in the Helen of the West Invitational Tournament staged in St. Lucia last October.

Frederick, undoubtedly, will play a pivotal role in helping this country regain pride in Netball at this year’s Windward Islands School Games, set to take place here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in July and August. (RT)
