Western Union proud of Mitres Netball Club

Western Union began sponsoring the Mitres Netball Club from 2007 to the tune of EC$5, 000, as they groomed for the National Netball Championship, a local title they have won several times in the past. The team placed 2nd in the league round and 1st in the knock out round.{{more}}

Winning the National competition in 2006 has earned them the right to participate in the 2008 Courts Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Club championship, and Western Union, through the donation of sports gear at a value of EC$1, 800, was there to show their full support to the team. The Mitres came 2nd in the championship to the Digicel Elites of St. Lucia.

The Western Union Mitres are now taking part in the 2008 Digicel National Netball Championships. The competition started on Sunday, April 13, 2008, and the real challenge will begin when the Western Union Mitres, who hope to win the Digicel National Championship for their home land St. Vincent and the Grenadines, meet the Digicel Elites again.

The Western Union Mitres Netball Club started as a past students’ team from the Bishop’s College Kingstown in 1981. The Mitres was the first team to represent St. Vincent in the OECS Club Championships.

The Club has produced some of the best players in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, several of who have gained scholarships to overseas Universities. To add, one former member, Sancho Lyttle, is now a player in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Western Union is indeed happy to be associated with the Mitres and will continue to be a sponsor, honing the athletic skills of the country’s next generation of leaders. The Mitres are wished every success, through values such as good sportsmanship, hard work and discipline, ideals which Western Union sees as fundamental in any sport.

We know they will make St. Vincent and the Grenadines, in addition to Western Union, very proud.
