Hector off to the English Leagues

This country’s brightest batting prospect, Donwell Hector, was scheduled to leave the state earlier this week to take up an eighteen week contract with First Division Club Austerland Cricket Club, to play in the Saddleworth Cricket league in England.{{more}}

Hector, who plays for Victors One in the local RBTT Premier Division competition, sealed the deal last week Wednesday with Andy Young, an Austerland Cricket Club administrator. Current St. Vincent and the Grenadines players Deighton Butler and Kenroy Peters were instrumental in securing the opportunity for Hector to play in England.

An excited Hector told SEARCHLIGHT last Sunday evening that it was a great feeling landing a professional cricket contract at his age.

“I am glad for the opportunity to play in the English conditions”, Hector said.

“Learning to adapt to the conditions will be good for me”, Hector projected.

“I have set my self goals to score big hundreds as my team will be depending on me a lot, because I am the professional in the team”, the former Mountain View Academy student added.

“I am also looking forward to improve my overall game with both the ball and the bat”, he outlined.

A tidy off spinner, Hector is expected to bear the brunt of the work for Austerland, granted his professional status.

Hector, as part of his contract, will have to pass on coaching tips to the club’s Under 15 players.

And he will have good company in that particular league, as Dominican Liam Sebastian, who is also a Windwards’ senior player, will be participating in Saddleworth.

Hector, 19, made his senior debut for St. Vincent and the Grenadines last year and immediately was selected to the Windwards team to the KFC Cup last October. He then played in the Carib Beer Series earlier this year. He was the lone centurion in the league competition of the 2007 Windwards Tournament, and his was the first century made by a Vincentian for several years in the four nation competition.

Hector played two consecutive years for the Windwards in 2006 and 2007 in the TCL West Indies Under-19 tournament, scoring two centuries, one in 2006 in Guyana and the other in St. Kitts and Nevis last year.

Hector was named this country’s 2007 Senior Cricketer for the year .(RT)
