Amidst the spate of resignations that has hit the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association, the 2008 National Club Netball Tournament starts this Sunday afternoon at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex.{{more}}

The Association’s Executive has three fewer persons, as another, Treasurer Michelle Guy, tendered her resignation last week, following former PRO Natasha Medford and First Vice President Sonja Lewis.

The Tournament this year will see a new sponsor, Digicel, on board.

And, when the roll call is made, thirty-seven teams should respond and be part of the March Past.

Embattled President of the SVGNA, Doris Mc Intosh, told SEARCHLIGHT last Tuesday that the opening ceremony will be extraordinary, with several give aways awaiting patrons.

Mc Intosh also said that there will be a Shooting Competition, which will be open to the general public, “with some attractive cash prizes at stake”.

The President, who remained focused, said that from 3:30 p.m, the teams will march off from the area of the Arnos Vale Methodist Church to the complex.

She said that spectacle normally associated with this aspect of the opening will be even better than previous years.

Mc Intosh told SEARCHLIGHT that there will be the normal inspection of teams, where they will vie for the awards of Best Banner and the Best Dressed team.

Mc Intosh also disclosed that there has been a reduction of teams in the Tournament.

“This year we have nine teams in Division One, nine in Division 2A, nine in Division 2B and ten in Division 3”, Mc Intosh revealed.

The 2008 Tournament marks the first of a three year deal with Digicel. A deal that is worth $60,000. The telecommunications company and the association, on review of the three years, will look at an extension.

The Tournament was previously had title sponsorship from Cable & Wireless. That sponsorship spanned a thirteen year period.

Mc Intosh said that the Tournament was a must so that the selectors can come up with a formidable squad to participate in the AFNA championships, which will be hosted here in July of this year. (RT)
