New Windward Islands selectors named

At last, the knowledge of former Windwards off spinner Stanley Hinds will be tapped.

Hinds, last weekend, was named as one of three selectors to the Windward Island senior cricket team, which is headed by another former Windwards player, St. Lucian Julian Charles.{{more}}

Hinds and Charles are the new faces on the panel. Charles takes over from former Chairman, Vincentian Julian Jack, who reports say declined re-election because of work commitments and studies.

Charles is a former Windwards captain, selector and team manager. Hinds replaces St. Lucian George Alfred.

Hinds told SEARCHLIGHT last Wednesday that he learnt of his appointment from the outgoing Chairman Jack, by way of a telephone call. Hinds further stated that he also received a similar call from Elson Crick, who is the newly installed Vice-President of the Windward Indies Cricket Board of Control (WICBC).

When asked for a reaction at his recent elevation, Hinds said he preferred to be silent on the matter.

Chief Executive Officer of the WICBC Lennox John also confirmed on Wednesday that Hinds was not formally informed, but this would be done in due course.

He said that the other Vincentian appointees were also not yet informed.

“The other appointees from the other territories went out by fax today”, John said.

The 56-year-old Hinds brings to the selection table several years of experience as a player and a coach.

Known for his no nonsense approach and out spoken demeanour, Hinds is also a selector in the local cricket set up here, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

John confirmed that Jack and company would serve for the remainder of the 2008 season, inclusive of the current Carib Beer Series, which is set to resume later this month.

Hinds is currently employed with the Department of Physical Education and Sports in the Ministry of Tourism, Youth and Sports.

Also at last weekend’s meeting, held here, officials of the Windwards Islands Cricket Board of Control increased the number of selectors to three.

Added is another former St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Windwards off spinner Irvin Warrican.

Warrican, the current coach of the senior St. Vincent and the Grenadines team, joins the two sitting members, Grenadian Raphael Croney and St. Lucian Keith Charlery. The junior selection panel will serve for the 2008 to 2009 period.

They are in charge of the Under -15 and Under-19 outfits.

But it was all the same for the positions of managers and coaches. Ex-St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Windwards and West Indies fast bowler Ian Allen was retained as Coach of the senior team.

Dominican Lockhart Sebastian remains in the position of senior team manager.

Vincentian Samuel Holder keeps his place as manager of the Windwards Under-15 team. Dominican Trevor Shillingford, like Holder, retains the coach’s spot.

Grenadian Raymond Duncan is the Under-19 team coach and St. Lucian Sean Edwards, the manager. (RT)
