Shallow is TASVG Athlete of the Year
Field athlete Adonson Shallow is the Team Athletics SVGâs Athlete of the Year. Shallow copped the award when the athletics body staged its annual exercise of recognition at Murray Heights Hotel, Mc Kies Hill, on December 15, 2007.
Shallowâs year of competition saw him establishing his personal best at the Discus, while winning the National Junior Colleges Shot Putt event.{{more}}
Currently attending the Arizona Sate College, Shallow placed second in the Shot Putt at the NACAC Open Championships in El Salvador in July. He was also named this yearâs Senior Male Athlete.
Taking away the title of Junior Female Athlete was Nadia Delplesche. She won the 3000m Open at this yearâs Inter Schoolsâ Meet and also triumphed in the Intermediate 1500m. Delplesche also won the 19 and under category of the Cross Country Run held October 28 last year, and was part of the winning team, X-Ceed, in the female division of the Round D Town Road Relay last November.
Delhonni Nicols-Samuel was adjudged the Junior Male Athlete of the Year. Based in Manitoba, Canada, Nicols- Samuel, whose training routine is mainly done on a treadmill, was this countryâs lone medallist at the 2007 Carifta Games. He took the bronze in the Under-17 3000m. Nicols-Samuel is the son of former national distance athlete Dane Samuel and the nephew of St. Vincent and the Grenadinesâ most accomplished female distance runner to date, Bigna Samuel. Both also were shining lights of the glory days of the Sion Hill Athletics Club.
Kineke Alexander was for another year crowned Senior Female Athlete. Into her last year at Iowa University in the USA, Alexander recorded a personal best of 51.48 in the 400m, at the NCAA Indoors. At the NACAC Open, she gained a bronze medal in that event. She also set a new mark in Iowaâs record books in the 400. Alexander lowered the mark of 52.01 seconds to 51.62. She also holds the St. Vincent and the Grenadines record of 51.35 seconds. Also during the course of the year, Alexander was named five time All American.
Yannick Nanton secured the Calvert Woods award for being adjudged the Most Promising Athlete.
The Georgetown Secondary School was named Club of the Year, and Byron Quamina, the Coach of the Year.
Keisha Sutherland was TASVGâs technical stand out person, with Shemma Franklyn accepting the award of Volunteer of the Year.
The new category of Peopleâs Choice, which involved on line voting, fax and a newspaper ad, saw Anneisha Anderson laying hands on the inaugural title.
Anderson was one of this countryâs representatives at the World Youth Championships in Ostrava, the Czech Republic. She also participated in the Junior Carifta Championships in Turks and Caicos.
The ceremony also recognised the outstanding performers at the Nestle Juvenile Championships and the Mustique Company National Championships.
The top awardees will automatically go forward as TASVGâs nominees to the National Sports Awards set for February 25, 2008. (RT)
