Exciting motor racing weekend

It was promoted as an exciting Motor Racing event, involving drivers from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and host St. Vincent and the Grenadines, but the Trinidadians did not make the trip.{{more}}

The Vincentians and Barbadians though, made sure the three day weekend lived up to its billing.

The competitive action was reserved for Saturday and Sunday, at the Diamond Dirt Track and Bequia, respectively.

Saturday’s high-octane action began the competitive aspect of the weekend. The thrills and manoeuvres kept the large crowd on its feet as the five Vincentian drivers matched the skills against their Barbadian counterparts.

When the dust settled, it was Shaundy St. Hillaire, in his Honda CRX, that emerged triumphant in the Drive Two category. He was followed by Barbadian Rhett Watson in his Ford Escort. Third was the experienced Trevor “Micey” Manning, driving his fire red Mitubishi Evolution.

One of Saturday’s showpieces was Manning’s match up with Vincentian driver Steve Ollivierre, that sent the crowd in a frenzy. Both sported versions of the Mitsubishi Evolution.

On Sunday, it was the turn of the Barbadians to take the top spot in the four wheel category, with Neil Armstrong, winning in his Mitsubishi Evolution VI. Ollivierre docked in second and another Vincentian Jerome Ryan, in his Madza placed third.

Spectators were warmed on Friday night at Diamond, by an open dexterity event.

The weekend’s races were put on by the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Automobile Association, which is into its 35th year as a sporting body.

Sol and C O Williams Construction were the major sponsors.(RT)
