Union Island takes Grenadines Hoops Championship

Union Island emerged victorious in the fifth annual Grenadines Hoops Championship, defeating Carriacou United 69 TO 58, who made their premier appearance in the Finals.

The tournament hosted and financed by te Bequia Basketball Association, and part sponsored by Hairoun Duna Water, came to a conclusion in Bequia on Sunday May 20th at the Clive Tannis Hard Court.{{more}}

Philmon Taylor was explosive and led the Union Island former Grenadines Champs in a close game netting 18 points and 3 assists, while Kennrick Gay of Carriacou contributed 19. In the award presentation, team- mate Steven Taylor was awarded team mvp for Union, leading his squad in outstanding performance in five games.

The overall tournament MVP with the most impressive statistics for the second consecutive year was Owen Isaacs of the Mayreau Kings (photo left), who was also adjudged most rebounds and most blocks, despite his team placing in the basement position of the Championships.

Semi final games saw Carriacou United defeat defending champions Tommy Hilfiger Mustique Icon to move on to the finals to contest Union Island, who in turn defeated the Bequia All-Stars in that semi final match up. The Bequia All-Stars, led by centre Craiglee Sam defeated Mustique to capture the Third Place consolation spot, 68 to 51.

Individual players were recognized for their performance as follows: Damian Harry of Canouan was his team’s MVP, also capturing the most points trophy with 159 in 5 games! Lindon Garrick of Tommy Hilfiger Mustique Icon was his team’s MVP, while Craiglee Sam and Nealon Cox took the team MVP awards for

the Bequia All-Stars and Carriacou United respectively. Nealon Clouden, also of Carriacou was awarded most steals trophy with 16 in 5 games, while Keon McFee of the Bequia All-Stars had the most assists with 12 in 5 games.

The trophies, courtesy of Adonal Foyle of Canouan who plays with the Golden State Warriors, were presented by Hon. Loraine Friday and Hon. Terrance Ollivierre, Northern and Southern Grenadines Parliamentary representatives respectively, as well as Bequia Basketball President, Ms Sabrina Mitchell, who is a member of the central board in the international parent body, Fiba America, and the regional Secretary-General, Caribbean Basketball.

The tournament was sponsored also by the Frangipani Hotel, Grenadines Airways, Wind & Sea Ltd., and Tamarind Beach Hotel.
