Bentick, Slater top in Squash Championship

As the 2007 National Squash Championships came to a close on May 11, James Bentick and Sherian Slater once again reigned supreme by capturing the premier titles of Men’s and Women’s Open champions respectively.{{more}}

Bentick proved to be in top form, cruising to the title without dropping a game, accounting for Kevin Hannaway, Leroy Edwards and Paul Cyrus. In the women’s event, Slater topped National and OECS Girls Under 19 Champ Amber Glasgow 9/3, 9/2, 9/1 before overcoming long-time rival Rachel Haslam 9/3, 9/2, 10/9, 9/7 for the title.

The Women’s 40+ title also resulted in a showdown between Slater and Haslam, with Slater prevailing 9/5, 9/5, 9/3 for the double. In the men’s 40+ division, Stephen Joachim (a 5th place finisher in the Men’s Open) emerged on top, claiming 9/2, 10/8, 9/7 and 9/6, 9/3, 9/6 victories over Telbert Samuel and Raphie King respectively. The Men’s 50+ title went to Leroy Lewis, who triumphed over John Horne in the final.

Following the tournament, a team was selected for the upcoming OECS Squash Championships in St. Lucia. The 13-member squad comprises James Bentick, Paul Cyrus, Shane Slater, Leroy Edwards, Stephen Joachim, Leroy Lewis, John

Horne, Kevin Bailey, Sherian Slater, Greta Primus, Amber Glasgow, Deirdre Myers and Vonnie Roudette. Team SVG will be looking to repeat its success as it defends the Men’s Open, Women’s 40+, Men’s 40+ and Overall Team Titles.
