Grammar School, Campden Park Secondary top athletics meet

The St. Vincent Grammar School and the Campden Park Secondary came out champions in the “make-shift” Inter School Sports Meet held last Monday and Tuesday at the Victoria Park.

Occasioned by the unavailability of playing fields, the two days of activities were a culmination of three zonal run offs that involved the Kingstown, Windward and Leeward schools.{{more}}

The Grammar School triumphed in the boys’ division held on Tuesday. The all-boys institution totalled 182 points, with the Campden Park Secondary docking second with 144 points. The Emmanuel High School Mesopotamia placed third with 91 points.

The champion school also took two of the individual awards that were at stake.

Richard Dickson won the Intermediate division as he led the way with 16 points.

The other accolade secured by the Grammar School was Ricky Haynes’ capture of the Senior Boys’ champion. He ended ahead of his competitors with his 19 points.

But the limelight shone on Martin Quashie Jr. of the St. Martin’s Secondary who was the Junior champion as well as the prized title of Victor Ludorum. The former C. W Prescod student won the 400 and 100m and placed third in the 200m.

Campden Park’s success among the girls outstripped the Girls’ High School’s efforts by 27 points.

Campden Park tallied 149 to the Girls High School’s 122. Trailing them were the St. Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua with 83 points.

Unlike the boys segment, there was keener competition for the divisional titles.

Keiren Franklyn of the Georgetown Secondary and Sabrina Francis of the Union Island Secondary tied for the Junior title. Both ended with 15 points.

Teneca James of the Intermediate High was the Intermediate champion. She finished with 20 points.

The Senior title was shared between Jovonne John of the St. Joseph Convent Kingstown and Orel Caine of the Campden Park Secondary. Both contributed 22 points to their schools and also shared the Victrix Ludorum title. Also a product of the C W Prescod, Cain ran away with the 200 and 400m and finished third in the 100m, while John, a senior and Under-23 national netballer, placed second in the 100 and 200M and fifth in the 400 and 1500M.

Twenty-one events were contested on each day of competition.

Twenty -four schools participated in the Zonal championships.
