Lewis reigns as 2006 Junior sports woman

Leanna Lewis is one of the most talented sportswomen that this country possesses. A field athlete, a basketballer and netballer, Lewis has excelled with great proficiency, but it is her exploits in the latter that earned her the 2006 Junior Sportswoman title at the National Sports Awards last Saturday night .

Lewis staved off challenges from athlete Kericha Fraser and tennis player Michelle Gun Munroe, the other finalists in a field which was narrowed down from six nominees.{{more}}

Lewis, 20, captained St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Under-23 netballers to the OECS title last August.

The accurate shooter was part of this country’s senior netball team to the Commonwealth Games last March in Australia as well as the World Qualifiers in Barbados in August.

A second year student at the St. Vincent Technical College, Lewis played a pivotal role in that institution’s capture of the netball segment of last year’s Inter Collegiate competition.

She has gone through the ranks of national representation having represented at the Under-16 level. She plays for High Park United in the Marriaqua competition and dons the colours of Inter Secondary Schools Seniors in the annual National club tournament.

Her nomination for a national award was her first, and copping the title made her “very happy” at the judges’ decision.

However, Lewis still believes that there is much more to be achieved as she seeks to get a basketball scholarship at one of the US colleges.
