Inter League reaches semis

The four semi-finalists have emerged as Guinness Inter-League football competition winds down.

They are Barrouallie, Kingstown, National Under-20 and Bequia.

Barrouallie and Bequia formalised their passage last weekend. Barrouallie despite losing to Marriaqua 4-5 last Friday night, advanced 8-6 on aggregate. Barrouallie won the first engagement 4-1 against a depleted Marriaqua outfit.{{more}}

Also on Friday night, Bequia added a 5-1 triumph to their 4-0 win in the first leg.

The other scheduled second leg encounters were played last Monday night. Kingstown and Arnos Vale played to a 1-1 tie but Kingstown advanced from the one goal advantage after winning game one 3-2. Under-20 after losing their first match 0-1 to Brighton rebounded to win 2-1, to advance on the away goal ruling.

The semi finals which will also take the home and away format was set to begin last Wednesday, with Barrouallie meeting Bequia and Kingstown facing National Under-20.

The eight had started a league system following the preliminary round involving fourteen leagues, but this was later scrapped. On consensual agreement the major entities involved acknowledged that “the dance couldn’t pay for the light”.

Players and spectators alike had reached the point of saturation following the preliminary round.

The revised structure has done little to get the crowds back; as players had to compete past two weekends before a virtually empty Victoria Park.

There have been some unhappy days for the organisers who had to endure the ups and downs to get the competition completed, as well as other administrative blotches.

The final is set for later this month, as the organisers juggle their fixtures with other cultural activities.

The final should see the temporary end of football activity, at the park.
