‘Vincy Heat must go the extra mile’

St Vincent and the Grenadines could become the smallest nation to qualify to the FIFA World Cup scheduled for South Africa 2010, but desperate measures would have to be taken.

That’s how Vincentian Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves views the situation.

He was congratulating the Vincy Heat football squad on their advance to the second round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup as well as their phenomenal leap on the FIFA ranking.{{more}} Dr Gonsalves joined parliamentarians Terrance Ollivierre, representative for the Southern Grenadines and Senator St. Claire Leacock in their praises for the Vincentian footballers as well as the executive.

The Vincentian leader used the occasion to repeat his government’s assistance to the local Football Federation during their 2006 World Cup campaign as well as provision of facilities designed to enhance the game of football here.

“I must congratulate Vincy Heat and all those involved in the leadership,” Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said.

But he is not going to rest on his laurels and Dr Gonsalves pointed out: “We still have a very long way to go. We can get better,” the PM declared.

“It is not inconceivable that SVG could be in the next World Cup. You have to go the extra mile. You have to climb the mountain top. Believe in yourself,” Dr. Gonsalves said.
