11 year-old recounts his paddle to Bequia

He is a shy 11 year-old, a first former at the St. Martins Secondary School. But he has already etched his name in the hearts and minds of a number of Vincentians. September 23, Damien Fernandez accompanied his father in a kayak on a mission to Bequia and back. The journey was aimed at raising money for the St. Benedict’s day Nursery in Georgetown.{{more}}

Fernandez, from the area of glen in the east St. George constituency, recounted on difficult tide on the return journey.

“The tide was pulling to Bequia,” he outlined.

Asked how he got on the journey with his dad, Fernandez outlined: “He told me he was going. I asked him if I could go along.”

He described the trip as “a bit calm, but the wind was blowing.”

Fernandez is a lover of the sea.

On the trip itself, Fernandez recalled: “I rowed, rested, then rowed again.” His favourite subject is English Literature.

Besides his exploits in the Kayak, Fernandez is a cricket fan as well as football.

But he does not have any intention of crossing the channel between Bequia and mainland St. Vincent again in the near future.

“I will do it again, but not right now,” he declared.
