Mission complete

Their mission was to paddle their kayak from mainland St Vincent to Bequia and back.

And, the father and son combination of Charles Findlay and Damien Fernandez achieved that daring feat last Saturday afternoon, as a fund raiser for the St Benedict’s Day Nursery at Georgetown.{{more}}

It’s left to the benevolence of persons to reward the duo’s efforts by donating cash or kind to the efforts of providing the unfortunate children of the state with a new home.

A tired but satisfied Findlay was elated that he and his 11 year-old son accomplished what they had set out.

Findlay sees himself as a “daredevil” and one who likes challenges, described the 18-mile return trip as “plenty fun”.

The journey took them five hours and 43 minutes and the return leg four hours 52 minutes.

Findlay said his son has a big heart and loved adventure, hence the partnership.

Fernandez, a Form One student of the St Martin’s Secondary School, summed up his achievement shortly after their return as “easy on the way down, but was hard coming up as the tide was pulling plenty”.

Divinely chartered, the two were blessed with fine weather, and surveillance by a coast guard vessel, added to their success in completing the historic feat.

The Findlay-Fernandez contribution is part of a nation wide appeal.

Several businesses and organisations have thrown their support to the reconstruction efforts.

An account for the project has been set up at the RBTT Bank.
