Cuba whips Turks and Caicos in Digicel Cup

HAVANA, Cuba – Host Cuba were in a no-nonsense mood as play in Group E of the expanded 2006/07 Digicel Caribbean Cup football competition got underway here Saturday, trouncing the Turks and Caicos Islands 6-0.

In another game, The Bahamas, playing in the Caribbean championships for the first time in many years, stopped the Cayman Islands 3-1.{{more}}

Cuba, who spent one month training and playing games in Germany recently, were in total control from the start and but for faulty finishing, would have won by a much larger margin. The exception was player-of-the-game Raul Alcantara who showed good form as he capped a hat-trick.

In the first game, The Cayman Islands were on the backfoot after only five minutes as they handed their opponents the advantage with an own goal. In driving rain, Johnathan Mosely made it 2-0 in the 35th minute and then Shencord Thompson sealed the win in the 86th minute after Leon Whittaker had pulled one back for the Cayman Islands in the 76th minute.
