Cricket Summer programme continues

by Shayne Alexander

The Sports department in the Ministry of Tourism, Youth and Sport continued its Cricket Summer Programme on Tuesday, August 15, 2006. That week’s venue was the Buccament Playing Field.

Coaches taking charge of the programme were Romel Currency and Orlanzo Jackson, who are current SVG National Cricket players. Speaking with Jackson, he disclosed that the main purpose behind the program is to keep the youths occupied for their summer vacation, keeping them off the street and give them further knowledge of cricket.{{more}} He also showed his satisfaction with the turnout for the programme “even though the first days tend to be the most shaky of them all”.

Jackson also said that the youths’ enthusiasm is very good, and all they need is someone to keep motivating them because the country has a lot of talent and this is the only way to really bring out that talent. “Over the years St.Vincent has been doing good in Under-15 cricket, and I think now that such programs are in place that St.Vincent would do even better.”

Jackson expressed gratitude to the Minister of Tourism, Youth and Sports for organising such an event and hopes that it will pay off in the end. The programme ran from last week Tuesday to Friday. The organizers are not certain about the next location but they hopefully want to reach places like Sandy Bay, Petit Bordel and Calliqua. Interested persons may contact the Sports Department for further information.
