Rising Stars, East Blazers record wins in Bequia tourney

The eighth annual Bequia Basketball is going into high gear, as teams are positioning themselves for spots in the play-off.

Five matches were completed last weekend. Former champions Mustique Icons found the going tough as they were at the losing end of their two First Division fixtures.{{more}}

On Saturday, they were beaten by Rising Stars 53-61, as Craiglee Sam was in form with 18 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. The leading scorer for the Icons was Gemey Richardson with 15 points.

It was 57-47 on Sunday, as Tradewinds East Blazers extended Icons’ losing streak. Anthony Sargeant with 20 points and 13 rebounds, was Blazers’ hot hand, while Lindon Garrick’s 16 points was icons’ top scorer.

In other First Division action, Duke defeated Westend Wizards 100-47, led by Gosnel Gumbs’ 41 points.

The lone Second Division encounter ended in a 75-53 triumph for Warriaz over Gladiatorz, as Dorenzo Joseph sank 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the victors. Vibert Davis had 21 points to his name, but in the end to a losing effort.

Hornets beat Young Wizards 38-20 in an Under-16 encounter. Damien Lewis scored 3 points and had 22 points for the Hornets.

The tournament is set to end Sunday September 10.
