Bequia basketball tourney shoots off

The Eighth Annual Bequia Basketball Zonal Tournament bounced off Saturday, July 15, at the Clive Tannis Hard Court in Bequia.

Twelve teams in three Divisions marched past, including a young all-female Under-16 Division team, Diamonds. The opening was addressed by Dr. Godwin Friday, Parliamentary Representative for the Northern Grenadines, and Bequia Basketball President, Sabrina Mitchell. Mitchell spoke of new policies coming on stream in Bequia to improve the administration of the game. She also spoke of investments by the Association including the purchase of a computer. She reminded players to familiarize themselves with the tournament by-laws.

Mitchell announced the upcoming Adonal Foyle Grenadines Summer Camps, one of which is scheduled for Bequia August 4.

Dr. Friday congratulated the Association on its achievement of eight years and spoke of the high level of organization.

He saw it as one of the best tournaments in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. He implored the players to appreciate the friendships formed while playing together, rather than focusing on the rivalry amongst teams.

The tournament concludes September 10.

In Saturday’s Games: Second Division:

Rising Stars defeated Gladiatorz 75 to 57 – leading scorer Rising Stars: Josias Robinson with 20 pointsts. Leading scorer Gladiatorz: Cosmus Hackshaw with 29 points.

First Division: Mustique Icon defeat ed Rising Stars 78 to 75 -leading scorer Mustique: Kendall Cumberbatch with 28 points. Leading scorer Rising Stars: Craig Sam with 23 points

On Sunday: Second Division: Young Blazers defeated Warriaz 66 to 58 – leading scorer Young Blazers: Jamal Hutchins with 19 points. leading scorer Warriaz: Kerry Frederick 25 points.

First Division:

Tradewinds East Blazers defeated DUKE 60 to 56 -leading scorer East Blazers: Keithroy Lavia 15 points. -leading scorer Duke: Gosnel Gumbs 21 points.
