Union Island takes Schools’ basketball title

The Sprite Schools’ Basketball title has made a southward journey to Union Island.

The Union Island Secondary School showed their worth last week Friday afternoon at the New Montrose Hard Court dethroning the St. Clair Dacon Secondary.

In an evenly contested final, the defending champion did the early charge taking a first quarter 21-13 lead.{{more}}

Union Island reversed the situation taking the next two quarters 34- 30 and 60-54, before eventually triumphing at 80-76.

Union Island’s victory was owed mainly to the 34 points sunk by the Most Valuable Player of the final Stevon Taylor.

The tournament’s Most Valuable Player Davon Ottley scored 30 points for the runner up.

Union Island was also adjudged the most disciplined team.

Barrouallie Secondary School took the third place. The Campden Park Secondary secured the female division in a two-way play off with the Dr. J P Eustace Memorial Secondary.

A best of three contest decided the winner as the tournament saw a marked decrease in participation especially among the females.

Officials at the Ministry of Sports are hoping for renewed interest in next year’s competition, in light of this year’s scaled down version.
