Six teams battle in Union basketball

The Ashton hard court in Union Island came alive with basketball action this weekend as the Sprite Fourth Annual Grenadines Tournament bounced off to an exciting start. All six Grenadines teams are participating in the 2006 championship – defending champions Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau, Union and Carriacou.{{more}}

The official march pass took place on Sunday, followed by a brief opening ceremony where the Hon Terrence Ollivierre, parliamentary representative for the Southern Grenadines gave an address, as well as coordinator of the Tournament and President of the Bequia Basketball Association, Sabrina Mitchell. Both spoke of the importance of the tournament on a national scale, being an intense high-level competition, which showcases the best talent from the Grenadine islands. Jeremiah Jones, president of the Southern Grenadines Association, also welcomed the teams to Union Island. The annual Grenadines Championship is hosted, organized and financed by the Bequia Basketball Association, with contributions from Sprite, Adonal Foyle and Frangipani Hotel.

Nine games took place over the weekend, which left Mustique victorious in all three games, with both Bequia and Union winning two games, and losing one each. Canouan and Carriacou won one game a-piece, and Mayreau is winless thus far.
