Packers aiming for Premier return

Irie Travel Packers’ quest to return to the top flight of local cricket was assisted last weekend with an outright win over Sion Hill at the Calliaqua Playing Field.

Relegated from the Premier Division following last year’s competition, Packers posted 205 in response to Sion Hill’s 173.{{more}}

Packers’ total was centered around former St.Vincent and the Grenadines and Windwards Under-19 opening batsman William “Bill” Edwards who had no mercy on his former club, hitting 108. Henderson Morgan struck 36. Augustine Victory followed up his top score of 46, when Sion Hill batted, bagging 6 for 75, and Gary Rodrigues 2 for 18.Batting a second time, Sion Hill was dismissed for 75 as Jamal Jeffrey took 4 for 41, to add to his 4 for 58 in Sion Hill’s first innings. Reynold Mofford top scored with 39.Asked to make 43 to win, Packers reached 48 for 3, with Ancil Hooper 24 not out. All three wickets were taken by Keron Davis for twenty six runs. They pushed their tally of points to 32 from 3 matches.

In another First Division fixture played at the Sion Hill Playing Field, Log Masters gained first innings points over Belmont, to extend their lead as they go in search of a play off spot.

Log Masters made 267, led by Elvis Browne’s 76 and 58 not out from Elson Crick.Adolphus Campbell 4 for 34 and Augustus Mofford 2 for 74 were the chief wicket takers for Belmont.

Mofford, a seasoned performer in the competition led the reply with 37 and Jerome Samuel 36, but these were insufficient as Belmont was dismissed for 169. Montgomery Sealy, 6 for 10, Elvis Nanton 2 for 22 and Lynton Greaves 2 for 45, combined to ensure first innings points for Log Masters, who were 76 for 3 in their second innings.

But the competition had a black eye as the Disciplinary Committee of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association will have to deliberate on a matter involving D and J Wines South Leeward and Unique Warriors.

South Leeward forfeited the match by walking off the field, with Unique Warriors at 312 for 9.Christopher Campbell was 86 not out at the time of the incident. Omar Jack and Hollis James both were already dismissed for 27 runs each. Jason Enville returned bowling figures of 2 for 33.

The Warriors were replying to South Leeward’s 289, which saw Venkat Baptiste making 58, Edson Gordon 44, and Kashique Yorke 32. Andre Hunte bagged 3 for 39 bowling for Unique Warriors.
